    I thought dolphins …
I thought dolphins were the only animal besides humans that had sex for pleasure… ?

  2. websnarf says:

    You don’t …
You don’t understand. Pleasure is the core motivation, probably for most (male) animals, but the genetic pressure is to coordinate with female ovulation cycles.

Bonobos both miss the cycles and engage in definitively non-productive sex (such as oral, and homosexual behavior.)

Do the dolphin and dog females seek sex when they are not ovulating?

  3. websnarf says:

    Bonobos and chimps …
Bonobos and chimps are types of each other. They are sister-species.

  4. websnarf says:

    Bonobos and …
Bonobos and Chimpanzees are themselves split from a common ancestor only 1 million years ago — Meaning that for the first 5 million years they were the same species that had split with us hominids.

So from a sheer probabilistic point of view, you would expect the two to be almost equally close to us anyways.

  5. websnarf says:

    Well the real …
Well the real question is what did the terrain look like 6 million years ago. The weather everywhere was radically different, and the forest / Savanah mix he is seeing there today may not have been like that when we split with the chimpanzee lineage.

The mechanism he proposes, however, perhaps should not be dismissed so easily. The current bipedal theories put forth today are not much better.

    and they even know …
and they even know grammar and spelling!

    I always thought …
I always thought that the common chimpanzee was the closest to man, but apperatly their DNA is the same (98.5% the same as us)

I guess thats why we’re so many at the planet.

    Vaginal intercourse …
Vaginal intercourse has plenty to do with procreation. And yet many animals do it for pleasure too. Take it from a pervert with a vasectomy. I can tell you that my sex is driven partly by my hornomal and pavlovian reactions, and yet I still enjoy its recreational aspects. Human sexual behavior is governed by seasons too, when it’s freezing cold people worry about not dying more than getting laid. So? It’s still recreational.

Bonobos are a type of chimp

    Worth mentioning – …
Worth mentioning – The planet’s climate over the course of the past 5-6 million years or so when Australopithecus Aferensis (like the famous Lucy), the believed “missing link” roamed the Earth, has changed DRAMATICALLY. So while that type of terrain may have lead to upright mobility, it’s highly highly doubtful that particular spot was where humans evolved…

  14. mcharnitski says:

    not entirely true – …
not entirely true – Dolphins, while intelligent, have pavlovian reactions to mating and those are mainly regulated hormonally. Bonobos actually have oral and anal sex – acts that have nothing to do with procreation. On top of that, those acts arent governed by seasonal hormonal changes. Take it from an Anthropologist

  15. mcharnitski says:

    it depends on if …
it depends on if youre talking genetically or behaviorally…

Chimpanzee’s are closer to us then Bonobos

Dolphins have sex for fun too. So do dogs and plenty of other animals.

  20. GraphiteManiac says:

    Hmm, well this …
Hmm, well this explains why us humans are such horndogs. Considering how much Bononos do, I’m thinking I was born to the wrong species. Higher brain function is overrated anyway. LOL

  21. white0nerdy says:

    actually,many …
actually, many animals have sex for fun, not just bonobos..dolphins, and ducks..just to name a couple =)
